Engaging Students, Empowering Teachers The 20th INGED International ELT Conference - Online, hosted by Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, Faculty of Education, ELT Department PLENARY SESSION 3 (Day 2, 10.00-11.00) Empowering English Language Teachers to Engage Teenage Learners: Challenges and Opportunities Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Amanda Yeşilbursa As part of their undergraduate Practicum courses, prospective English teachers all over the world spend time in local primary and secondary schools gaining experience with “real students”. In my own institution in Bursa, Turkey, the first semester is carried out at primary and middle schools, and the second semester at high schools, and some prospective teachers can find the transition from teaching young learners to teaching teenagers rather daunting. Young learners are enthusiastic, keen to please the teacher and willing to join in the activities. Teenage learners, on the other hand, do not show the same enthusiasm or energy. When compared with child development and how children learn languages, adolescence has only relatively recently begun to attract the attention of researchers. In this talk, I will unpack what we know about adolescence, underlining the potential challenges that can arise for language teachers and how these challenges present teaching opportunities. Given that pedagogical knowledge empowers teachers to make informed practical decisions, in the first half of the talk I will touch upon the changes in the cognitive, affective, social, and behavioural characteristics of teenagers. The second half will present some practical suggestions based on this knowledge that may help to engage teenage English language learners. By doing so, I hope to reach out to both prospective and in-service English teachers working with teenage learners.
