India's Biggest IBC Battleground where Adani vs Anil Agarwal fighting over the ₹60,000 Crore Jaypee group. One of India's most dramatic corporate battles has landed in the Supreme Court — and at its centre is the bankrupt skeleton of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), a once-mighty conglomerate that built expressways, cement plants, hydropower dams, luxury hotels, and entire townships across India. Check Odoo Accounting here: https://www.odoo.com/r/liW With admitted creditor claims exceeding ₹57,000 crore and assets sprawling across real estate, power, cement, and hospitality, this is not just another insolvency case — it is the crown jewel of India's IBC era. Jaiprakash Associates was admitted into insolvency on June 3, 2024 by the NCLT Allahabad bench following ICICI Bank's petition, triggered by years of catastrophic debt default. What followed was a high-stakes auction that drew 28 expressions of interest — but ultimately, only two serious giants remained at the table: Gautam Adani's Adani Enterprises and Anil Agarwal's Vedanta Group. In September 2025, Vedanta stunned the market by emerging as the highest bidder at ₹17,000 crore (NPV ₹12,505 crore) in the challenge auction. Adani's counter-bid stood at ₹14,535 crore. By every headline number, Vedanta appeared to have won. Then came the twist that shook India's corporate world. In November 2025, the Committee of Creditors voted an overwhelming 93.81% in favour of Adani Enterprises — rejecting Vedanta despite its higher headline value. The decisive differentiator was payment structure: Adani committed over ₹6,000 crore upfront within two years, while Vedanta offered just ~₹2,000 crore upfront with back-ended payments stretched over five years. Creditors, led by NARCL — a government-backed entity holding 85% voting power in the CoC — valued certainty of recovery over headline figures. The NCLT formally confirmed Adani's resolution plan on March 17, 2026. What makes this saga explosive is what happened next. On March 29, 2026, Anil Agarwal took to social media — opening with a Bhagavad Gita verse — and publicly claimed that Vedanta had been declared the highest bidder in writing before the decision was mysteriously reversed. He invoked Jaypee founder Jaiprakash Gaur's personal request in London that his life's work go into "safe hands." Agarwal called the outcome a "commercial conspiracy," escalated to NCLAT, and then the Supreme Court. The apex court declined immediate relief, while the NCLAT matter continues on priority. Ironically, Jaiprakash Gaur himself has since publicly expressed full confidence in Gautam Adani to carry forward the Jaypee legacy. The question everyone is really asking is whether NARCL's 85% CoC stranglehold — given its deep government ties — made this a commercially clean decision or a politically guided one. Vedanta's own credibility isn't spotless either: Viceroy Research's 2025 report flagged Vedanta Resources' finances as structurally fragile. The NCLAT appeal will determine whether Agarwal's ₹3,000 crore higher bid can overturn a near-unanimous creditor mandate — and whether India's IBC process truly runs on commercial logic, or on something far more complex.
