I have a lot of shrubs and many of them are boxwood. I like the versatility they provide for choosing the shape and growth pattern. Some I keep small and others I let get large. I also let some grow into high hedges or maintain others as a low hedge. No matter what size or habit, yearly trimming is super important to maintain a healthy and full shrub. â SUBSCRIBE for more great videos! http://bit.ly/WyseGuide Like my page on Facebook: http://bit.ly/WyseGuideFB Visit my website: http://bit.ly/Wyse_Guide Check me out on Instagram: http://bit.ly/WyseGuideIG ------------------------------ â Trimming is not just a hobby or a way to pass the time. It's needed for the health of the shrub. Yearly trims can help: - maintain the size so a shrub doesnât grow out of control - gain new growth for a full, filled-out form Here are some tips: - For a hedge, you can run a string line for a point of reference. - For evergreens (like boxwood), do not cut all the green leaves/needles off leaving only bare sticks. Trim down making sure to leave at least one inch or more of green growth. Evergreens do not often come back easily from hard pruning that removes all green growth. - Make many small snips and cuts as opposed to fast deep ones. This will provide a more even cut. - If you are wanting a more "natural" look, give a cut that evens up the growth on the evergreen but doesn't give as much of a sculpted appearance.â â - Have sharp and clean hedge shears. Cleaning them after trimming helps them maintain clean cuts and prevents them from getting a gummy buildup. I use Okatsune shears as they have a really terrific, sharp blade. Trimming, even lightly, helps a shrub grow more uniformly. But the most important part: be patient. A few more minutes is worth it for a good cut. Soon youâll have hedges and pruned shrubs you love! #gardenguy #boxwood #boxwoodhedge #gardensofyoutube
