Obi-Wan walks out of the Jedi Council Chambers with Anakin close at his heels. As they make their way to Anakin’s quarters, the young man lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding as the news sinks in. The Council will allow him to train the boy. It was surprising for him, as they seemed adamant about their concerns when Qui-Gon suggested it before. When Obi-Wan turns the corner towards the younglings' quarters, he nearly runs into another figure: an older man with dark hair that is starting to show signs of grey underneath. Anakin notices him first, and his grip moves closer to Obi-Wan. Despite his seniority, the Jedi Master stops and bows respectfully. Dooku: Young Kenobi, a moment if you please. Obi-Wan: Master Dooku, what can I do for you? Dooku: Well, first, allow me to offer my condolences for your loss. Qui-Gon, he was a man unlike any other. Obi-Wan: Indeed he was, but you deserve condolences as well, Master. He was your student. Dooku: A kind thought, and one I appreciate. Thank you. As for this boy, is he the one Qui-Gon rescued? The Chosen One? Obi-Wan: He is, Anakin. This is Master Dooku; he’s the Jedi who trained Qui-Gon. Anakin (9 years old): Hello there, Master Jedi. I’m honored to meet you. Dooku: Please, the honor is mine. At long last, I get to meet the one who caused this stir. Tell me, my boy. Is it true that the Jedi agreed to induct you into the Order? Anakin (9): Yes, Obi-Wan promised to teach me everything Qui-Gon knows and that he would have been happy to hear it. Dooku (Scoffs): I certainly agree; Obi-Wan is a fine young man. But after everything they said, it is the least they can do. Were they truly prepared to turn you down for a simple matter such as your age? The Chosen One? It speaks volumes to the so-called wisdom of the Jedi Council. Obi-Wan: Master: Is that fair to say? Dooku: Why? Tell me, young one? Does having seniority and rank mean they are immune to criticism? I would hope not, but sadly that appears to be the direction the Jedi Order is heading, and it tells me that they are not worth your presence. Anakin (9): …what? Dooku: I mean, Qui-Gon wished for you to be instructed in the Living Force, I am sure. Even with the Jedi’s support, I doubt you will receive such training. Your only chance of learning that is by taking your training elsewhere. Obi-Wan: Hang on, Master. I appreciate your concern for the boy, but this is my charge, and I should decide where he goes. Dooku: Of course, I apologize if I overstepped. I simply raise this as a matter of concern, and I want you to know you do not have to train Anakin alone. I do not mean to sound rude, but you are barely even a Jedi Knight yourself. It is a great responsibility for one so young. Obi-Wan: Perhaps, but it is also my responsibility, and I am ready to take it. After all, it was his dying wish. With all due respect, he had issues with how you trained him as well. Dooku: Now that is unkind…but not untrue. Yet his issue was not with me alone, but also the Jedi Order…they are too rigid, too unable to act beyond the code. That is not the way of the Living Force. It is also not how he learned about it either. Obi-Wan: T-then how did he learn? Dooku: By travelling and experiencing the galaxy for himself. I did not remain in the Temple for long. I often partook in missions in the Outer Rim, and that is where Qui-Gon strengthened his connections. Tell me, do you think the Order will do the same to a newly made Jedi and the Chosen One? No, you will spend years here in the archives until they deem you ready. Obi-Wan: Even if I agree with what you say, where can we go? Dooku: With me. I have long had my doubts and disagreements with the Jedi Order. In truth, Qui-Gon was the only thing keeping me here, but that thread has been severed. #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
