The Dark Sideā (Story Time with DiRt) The Dark Side was written around 8 years ago. This song is about my best friendās older brother who struggled with addiction for the majority of his life and the story does not end how it was supposed to end. He dabbled in all types of substances but his main poison of choice was heroin. This is a f%cking tragic story of a beautiful person who was tortured by his addiction. I have never in my life seen someone fight so hard to be sober. Iām not sure the exact number but Iām pretty sure this guy self volunteered himself into some type of rehab program at least 10 times. He genuinely wanted to be sober. And you know what⦠After years and years of trying over and over⦠He f%cking did it!!! He got sober!!! There wasnāt anyone on the planet that I was rooting for more than him to get sober! Seeing him āAliveā again made me so stoked!! He was black and white. When he was using he was in a pit of hell. When he was sober, he was the absolute coolest most genuine loving HAPPY person you could ever meet. Micha made it one year without using⦠All of us around him could see it. He had changed. He was doing it. He was really fucking doing it. He was sober and his light was shining bright as the sun itself. I have 3 sisters. Micha was the closest thing I ever had to a big brother. He was older and bigger than me when I was little, and he would pick on me. But as time went on I grew and we were very much alike so we had our fair share of fist fights and arguments but thatās the point. No matter how many times shit got wild I always loved his crazy ass, and trust me he was a wild one. But as wild as his wild side was. His genuine loving heart shined through just as much. He was the guy you call when some serious shit was going down and you need someone to back you up. Heās gonna hop in the truck and be ready to brawl no questions asked. He was as loyal as they come. For the last year Micha had been sober. Truly sober. He was living his best life. He met a girl, they fell in love. She got pregnant with a baby boy. āMicha Jr.ā who is now here with us 1 month after my brother Michaās passing. He was so excited for his new life and couldnāt wait to be a father! And he wouldāve been a damn good one! Unfortunately this is where the story ends. š Michaās battle with substance abuse took his life. 1 year sober. He had a rough night and decided he needed to ease his pain as has done so many times before. Unfortunately this would be his last. This was not supposed to happen. He was not supposed to die. He wanted to live. He was a good person with a bad drug addiction. This is honestly the most tragic loss I have experienced to this type of thing. I have lost other friends to drugs but Micha, he was my f%cking brother! I had so many many conversations about sobriety with him and I love him deeply. So this pains me in a different kinda way. I wanted to share his story because I think itās important we make sure to do everything in our power to be there for the people in our lives who struggle with addiction. Their life can be over in an instant. One moment they are here and the next they are gone. People who struggle with addiction can be assholes, they can be mean and they try their best to push āHelpā away. We cannot give up on those people. Because behind all that anger and pain and hurt is a beautiful person that is struggling to feel okay within themselves. There is a soul that is crying out for help. We cannot let them sit there and suffer alone. We must reach out with an open hand and help them out of the fire.
