Suddenly, men from the Emperor's secret service and defense arrive, escorting the Emperor himself, Uriel Septim VII, who recognizes the Prisoner as a familiar face, even though they have never actually met. The Emperor is on the run, pursued by unknown assassins, and must escape the Imperial City. Thanks to a secret passage, the Prisoner escapes from prison together with them. However, the Emperor is killed in a surprise attack; before his death, he confesses to the Prisoner that he must find his heir, who disappeared anonymously, to relight the Dragonfires and prevent the opening of the gates of Oblivion.
