Weâve already discussed many trends and fashions that have arisen in the past few years, particularly as the world has moved increasingly online, however, one of the few we havenât actually touched on yet is one of the most representative of the new cyber ecosystem, and that is the inescapable presence of cryptocurrency. Now, cryptocurrency has existed for a while, with its origins rooted in the late 20th century and the pioneering example of this: Bitcoin, making its debut in 2009. However, its ubiquity has been more recent, with Bitcoin growing from a few hundred dollars in value by 2015, to over 100,000 dollars by 2025 needless to say, if you had caught the crypto train early, you had a lot to celebrate. However, with the astronomical rise in its value, has also come a comparable rise in its cultural presence, creating a variety of sub-trends and cultivating its own league of fanatics. Obviously there are some people who can play the markets very well, and have likely made a pretty penny off trading in crypto, but one of the aspects of crypto is that it's so new, that a lot of people donât really understand how it works, even some of the enthusiasts, weâve seen that in the past few years with certain crazes that have mostly turned out to be fads, that there are a lot of people who jump on bandwagons without really understanding what drives the bandwagon in the first place. One of the more longstanding trends within crypto, is that of a âmeme coinâ, which is a coin that wasnât created to be serious legal tender, but something for the amusement of its creators and/or the greater internet. The progenitor of this was DogeCoin in 2013, which was created as a joke by some software engineers, as a reference to the shiba inu doge meme from around that time. The idea of the coinâs success became a meme in itself, being wielded by billionaire businessman Elon Musk, who took his promotional campaign to the likes of Saturday Night Live, even naming his special little Governmental âcost-cuttingâ program: Department of Government Efficiency, abbreviated to DOGE. In spite of having the richest man in the world behind it, Dogecoin has never actually taken off in comparison to its more serious contemporaries, and currently sits at around 20 cents in value. Yet the principle that anything and anyone can become a cryptocurrency in todayâs day and age has certainly been taken to heart in the past few years, with the rise of a more notorious manifestation of crypto: the shitcoin.
