"Over 400 years we have been taught in the colonial churches that the man Christ of 2000 years ago was a European as portrayed in the church and the schools and the homes, but there is not one biblical reference in the bible that substantiates this portrayal. When we examined the history books we found out that it was Michelangelo under the instruction of Pope Julius II who drew the image of Christ as a European, in fact he drew his uncle and cousin and his uncle’s wife depicting them as Mary, Joseph and the Christ child. All the angels he drew them white for the pope and then this was sanctioned and went out in all the churches, schools and homes, and the minds of every people on the face of the earth took onto this image of Christ as a European. When we examine the family background of Christ coming from the family of David, we know historically that these people were indigenous people of Africa, as David was black, his father Jesse was black, Solomon was black, so in fact Christ must have been an African. Now, this is one of the things that the slave masters and colonial preachers used to enslave the Africans, having them bowing and praying to a white, blond haired, blue eyed Christ when in fact there is no scripture reference when we turn to the bible for proof of this portrayal. There is not one verse that substantiates this. Revelation 1 depicts the Son of Man as having the hair of his head like pure wool, his eyes like flames of fire, and his feet like onto fine brass, as if it burned in a furnace. So if we should draw from scripture reference the portray of Christ, there is no way we should have portrayed Him as being a European, and I think that is one part of the mental slavery that still exists today upon our people, and the Rastafarian community internationally is calling on all people irrespective of color, race or creed to accept Christ for what He was and is." – Ras Ivi Tafari at the 1997 International Rastafari Gathering in Guyana.
