Co-Founder of Food Rescue US, Kevin Mullins captured the essence of his app based organization that rescues unused food this way: “It’s awesome for neighbors to be taking care of neighbors and that’s really what Food Rescue US is all about.” Food Rescue US was started by two old friends--Kevin Mullins and Jeff Schacher. Kevin is a pastor and Jeff worked in the restaurant and tech industry. They took their experiences in their respective careers and applied them to achieve their goal of simplifying food rescue by using technology to connect donors, volunteers and receiving agencies. The cornerstone of this effort is the Food Rescue US app which is FREE for anyone to download. Donors can enter the information of how much food they have to donate, what kind of food, etc. Volunteers can see which restaurants or grocery stores have food to donate so they can go pick it up and drop it off to recipients. This prevents food waste and brings meals to people who are in dire need of them-- people in homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, churches, Veterans Hospitals, etc. Kate Urbank, the Washington DC Site Director, has seen firsthand why individuals are drawn to this opportunity to help. “If you can’t stand food waste, and it makes you crazy, then you know you can come volunteer and make a difference,” she explains. “Our people really like technology and the flexibility of using an app and seeing how it works. “ Since its origin in 2011, Food Rescue US has saved more than 39 million pounds of food from the landfill and delivered over 30 million meals. They now operate in 14 states and Washington DC.
