From a clinical perspective male disposability makes sense; eggs are expensive, sperm is cheap. But how does this evolutionary survival mechanism translate into a bigger social picture? The old honorific, "women and children first" is a social convention that finds its roots in male disposability, but also in elevating the survival imperative of women above that of men. Why is it an honorable imperative for men to go down with the ship (even when there are extra seats in the life rafts)? Male sacrifice is an expectation and entitlement in a gynocentric social order, but is the social convention just an outdated vestige of a survival adaptation we no longer need? Also, where does women's 'duty' lie in this respect?
