ANCIENT WORLD-EGYPT PAPYRUS VS. CEYLON PALMS | EGYPT WROTE ON PAPYRUS. CEYLON WROTE ON PALMS. πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¬ πŸ‡±πŸ‡° How can knowledge survive its creator? In this episode of Ceylon Inside, we travel from the banks of the Nile to ancient Ceylon to explore two remarkable writing traditions: Egyptian papyrus and Sri Lankan palm-leaf manuscripts. Ancient Egyptians transformed Cyperus papyrus, a Nile wetland plant, into writing sheets used for religion, administration, mathematics, medicine, literature and everyday records. Thousands of kilometres away, Ceylon developed its own sophisticated manuscript tradition using prepared palm leaves, particularly associated with **talipot, palmyra and lonta palms**. But the most fascinating difference is how the words were written. Egyptians generally wrote with ink on prepared papyrus. Sri Lankan scribes traditionally incised letters directly into palm leaves using a stylus, sometimes applying a darkening substance to make the writing visible. These manuscripts preserved far more than Buddhist texts. They carried knowledge of Ayurveda, medicine, astrology, grammar, poetry, law, agriculture, history and traditional practices. We also explore an often-repeated claim about Sinhala writing: did palm leaves actually make the Sinhala script rounded? The answer is more complicated. The evolution of Sinhala script is ancient and complex, but the physical properties of palm leaves were certainly one factor that influenced scribal practice. Most importantly, Egypt and Ceylon did not need to copy each other. Their environments provided different materials. Human ingenuity transformed those materials into information technologies. Papyrus beside the Nile. Palm leaves across tropical Ceylon. Different landscapes. Different techniques. Different civilisations. **One human ambition: to make knowledge survive.** Today we store our collective memory in servers and clouds. Ancient civilisations stored theirs in plants. And somehow, thousands of years later, those fragile materials still allow the voices of the past to speak. Welcome to Ceylon Inside.
