Her last house was older, some of the wiring was old, and keeping up with it got to be almost scary. She couldn't keep things up the way she used to, and she started to feel trapped. She wanted something she could take care of. Now, at 70, she can fix most things herself without waiting on someone to come in, and when the spring painting comes around, she can grab a little can and it'll be done. Hilda is a substitute teacher, and she spends Sundays cooking meals for the freezer so dinner is ready when she gets home. She doesn't bake the breads she used to, so a small kitchen suits her. The air fryer is something she wouldn't take anything for. She loves her deep single sink with the spray faucet, a little dishwasher that sure does the job, and the kitchen window where she does a lot of her daydreaming. A drink bar holds her coffee and teas. Her favorite part is the high wood ceiling, which keeps the kitchen from ever feeling like a little area. The living room is where Hilda reads her Bible, writes and watches her soaps from her easy chair after work. During one of the worst ice storms the area has seen, she curled up there under a fuzzy blanket, happy as a peach. There's a window on every outside wall, and the windows are what sold her on this home. In a tiny home, she says, most everything needs to serve two purposes. Her couch pulls out into a bed when family comes to stay, and the table her son-in-law found opens up to seat four. Hilda has lived around here since 1988 and raised her kids here. Gwen, a friend of her daughter's from high school, owns the community. Gwen found these tiny homes, told Hilda they'd be perfect for her, and helped her pick one out and get set up. The well, sewer, internet, electricity, gate and pavilion all come with it, the kind of setup she'd have had to build herself on a piece of raw land. It's gated, there's always somebody around, and an apartment would never have let her keep her plants. In the bathroom, Hilda keeps everything out where she can grab it and go. The high ceiling keeps it open, and at night the moon in her bathroom window looks like a picture. She chose a safety tub because getting in and out of a regular tub gets harder as you get older, and this one still lets her soak. The bedroom has a back door onto the back porch, and some mornings Hilda opens it up and lies there watching the birds. A dresser, an antique pie safe, baskets and storage under the bed hold everything she needs. She skipped the lofts because you can't stand up in them, and that's not functional space to her. The porches are Hilda's favorite part. Out back she gardens, does her crafts, has her morning coffee and watches the deer and turkeys while the wind chimes play. The front porch is for company, because a lot of people feel more comfortable on your porch than in your house. Out front grows a rosebush started from a cutting of her grandmother's rosebush. Hilda went through 30 or 40 homes before she found this one, and it was the one that had it all. She plans on living tiny until she's at least 80, and she intends to make this her ten year home. HER ADVICE "You know, painting and cleaning, if that's all you do in your life, that's no fun. That's not what we want to be doing. We wanna be out walking and hiking. You have that opportunity in a tiny home. I love living in my little tiny home. Everything is so much easier and less complicated."
