In 1587, 117 English men, women and children were left on Roanoke Island. Three years later they were gone, leaving one carved word behind: CROATOAN. For more than 400 years, that was where the trail ended. Now archaeologists working on Hatteras Island, the Croatoan of 1587, say they have found blacksmithing debris, Elizabethan objects, and a deer jaw with a musket ball lodged inside, reportedly radiocarbon dated to the 1580s. This file looks at the evidence, the doubts, and what it would take to solve America's oldest mystery.
