Continuing where Part II left off. We are going to measure the restored 6516! Actually, I'll show you the measurement process to demonstrate that using a 120V zener to drop screen voltage of 807 in triode mode DOES NOT work. I did measurements the night before without the zeners, and the amp measured beautifully, very nice undistorted sine, triangle and square waves even at 20VAC output to 15,6R, that is, at 25,6W output power. The peak output was 60W, but with quite a bit of overshoot and ringing, especially at 20Hz and 20kHz - at 1kHz even the 60W output was relatively clean! However, here I show that with the zener in on the 807 screen the output power is much reduced, and this video is to show you what a bad measurement looks like: how ringing looks, how overshoot looks, and what sagging looks like. All of these became issues after the addition of the zeners, so I do not recommend zeners on the screens of the 807 in triode operation for an Ampex 6516 rebuild. They were removed right after shooting this video ; . The zener was installed for tube longevity concerns, to drop the screen voltage. However, as we can see, the price to pay is a serious drop in output power. Going through some safety practices and measuring tricks. The 807 is perfectly happy to be run in triode mode with the screen connected to plate with a big resistor. (With fixed screen voltage never exceed 300V for the 807 screen! But through a largish resistor, you can go much higher in triode mode, as the screen voltage will drop lower and lower once its current starts picking up, and will limit the screen current, and thereby, its dissipation.) This is the second unit (I named it Machi, the first unit is Kintu - they are named after my cats). Thank you for watching, I hope you can find one of these beauties and revive it for yourself. (Even if you find only one, GRAB IT, and run it pseudo-mono, with 2 speakers hooked up to 1 amp it is AMAZING - speaking from experience.) There's next to no insight on this amp online, but all two instances I found who talk about it, they all say it's the most musical, most natural sounding amps they ever heard, and both found it superior to a Marantz 8B. I concur that it's an unexpected classic gem, my #1 favorite push-pull amplifier ever. Please like and subscribe. I will continue to document the journey of reviving and fine tuning of these beauties, explaining my choices, which aim to keep the sonic signature close to the original, and the changes are to accommodate improvement in parts technology, and lowering of noise and improving power supply reserves. Final words: pairing them with the Altec speakers (in future video) - created an amp-speakers combination made in heaven. No wonder, as the Ampex amps were created for Altec speakers - and the Altec drivers were specifically designed for Ampex amps!!!! So, whatever you read about Altec speakers, if not driven by Ampex amps, it is MOST LIKELY a vast underachievement of what the Altec speakers are capable of. And, also in reverse, Ampex amps with non-Altec speakers show only a fraction of their potential. Amps all have potential, and they show just glimpses of their prowess with non-optimal speakers. For example, the Ampex 6516 is ABSOF.iNGLY AMAZING with my restored Mirage 760 (with vastly improved modern crossover, bringing it to present day 10K$ new speakers performance category). Yet, when you use extremely well matched amp-speaker combination, it jumps to a whole next level of musical bliss. Let's find The Holy Grail together, and find out whether Japan's hard-core Ampex-obsession has foundation in sonic reality! (FYI, if you have not known, in Japan and in South-East Asia the most coveted king-of-all-amplifiers-ever is AMPEX, and Japanese audiofiles go to extreme lengths to obtain Ampex specimen - these amps have the true bragging rights in Japanese audio circles. Modern ultra $$$ amps are comparatively held in much lower esteem. Audio is not always about the most ridiculous sums of money....)
