Since 1975, he has practiced Buddhism in the Sōtō Zen and Vipassanā traditions. Fronsdal was ordained as a Sōtō Zen priest at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1982 and spent time as a Theravāda monk in Burma in 1985. He received Dharma transmission from Mel Weitsman, the abbot of the Berkeley Zen Center, in 1995. Fronsdal is a guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City and holds a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University. He has contributed significantly to the Vipassanā teachers' collective at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, influenced by his mentor, Jack Kornfield. Fronsdal's numerous Dharma talks are available online, where he simplifies complex Buddhist concepts for lay practitioners.
