We dive into the harrowing reality of witch trials across early modern England, Scotland, and colonial America. Subscribe here: https://bit.ly/subhistoryextrayoutube Join Marion Gibson, professor of Renaissance and magical literatures at the University of Exeter, as she explores a chilling questions: what were your chances of survival if you were accused of being a witch? What were your options â would you confess or deny? And what did that mean for your fate? In this video, Professor Gibson compares how witch trials differed across jurisdictions. In places like Germany or Scotland, procedures varied widely, sometimes involving the highest authorities in the land, including monarchs like King James VI and I. Hear how, in England, the Witchcraft Act of 1563 standardised legal responses, shifting trials from church to secular courts â where the stakes were much higher. Considering trials such as the infamous 1692â3 examples at Salem in colonial Massachusetts, and the 1613 case of Mary Sutton, Prof Gibson explains the practices meant to âtestâ witchcraft, from âswimming the witchâ to the trials themselves that demanded the participation of hundreds of people. Uncover the real importance of these events within the mindset of the time: trials were not always cynical or sadistic, but were embedded in religious and social systems that demanded justice against perceived evil. They were no harmless circus: many lives were lost to fear, error, and deeply held beliefs.
