The Andhra Pradesh coalition government is making intensive efforts to establish a massive Integrated Mega Textile Park spread across 2,000 acres, with an estimated investment of ₹50,000 crore. The project is expected to become a major milestone in the state’s industrial development and create significant employment opportunities. Recently, IT and Electricity Minister Nara Lokesh and Minister T. G. Bharath visited Kerala and met Sabu Jacob, Managing Director of leading garment manufacturer Kitex. The ministers proposed that Kitex become the lead partner for the project. In response, the company reportedly expressed interest in investing between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,000 crore and participating in the development of a world-class industrial layout and partnerships with global brands. The mega textile park is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for nearly 2 lakh women, particularly those from rural areas. Women could find opportunities across the entire textile production chain, including cotton processing, spinning, weaving, fabric processing, stitching and quality inspection. Through skill development and training programmes, local women are expected to gain access to secure employment with monthly salaries and benefits such as Provident Fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI). Supporting industries and services, including transportation, canteens and packaging, could also create additional livelihood opportunities for local self-help groups. Instead of limiting the state to exporting raw cotton, the government plans to implement a “Five-Point Formula” to bring the entire textile value chain under one roof, from cotton processing to the manufacture of high-end apparel for international brands. The state is also planning to seek financial support from the Central Government through national initiatives such as the PM MITRA scheme. Possible locations for the proposed 2,000-acre project include Mangalagiri, Dharmavaram, Anantapur and areas near port corridors.
