One is the first road car with a Formula One paddle shift. The other is a black C3 Corvette you can fix with a $79 water pump. Which one made the better buy over the last five years? On this Assess and Caress, Jay and Donald Osborne visit the Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, for a theme Donald calls "two-seat motoring, high and low": a 1997 Ferrari 355 F1 Berlinetta and a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette, both in black. The Pininfarina-styled 355 carries a 375 horsepower V8 with five valves per cylinder, but the story is the gearbox. Ferrari first raced electro-hydraulic paddle shifting in 1989 on the 640 driven by Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger. Mansell won first time out, then reliability problems followed, and it took nearly a decade to reach the street. Jay also makes what he calls "a very controversial" point: the Honda NSX forced Ferrari to rethink quality and reliability, and you can see it in this car. Donald explains why an F1 car that kept its original gearbox may be worth more long term than one converted to a gated shifter. The 1981 Corvette makes 190 horsepower, and Jay admits he likes the C2 better. Donald defends the engineers, who fought emissions rules and cost cutting with a fiberglass rear leaf spring, magnesium valve covers and lighter exhaust manifolds. Jay explains his "cross the country test," why Corvettes always pass it, and why young buyers now see the badge differently than they did in 1981. Then Jay makes his pick, and Donald brings out the numbers. #ClassicCars #SportsCars #Ferrari #Corvette #CollectorCars #Ferrari355 #F355 #C3Corvette #JayLenosGarage #JayLeno Shop car care and detailing supplies from Jay Leno’s Garage: https://www.lenosgarage.com/shine » Subscribe: http://bit.ly/JLGSubscribe THE BEST OF JAY LENO'S GARAGE » Exclusive First Looks: http://bit.ly/JLGExclusives » Ultra Rare Supercars: http://bit.ly/JLGSupercars » Jay's Book Club: http://bit.ly/JLGBookClub JAY LENO'S GARAGE ON SOCIAL Facebook: http://facebook.com/JayLenosGarage Twitter: http://twitter.com/LenosGarage Instagram: http://instagram.com/jaylenosgarage/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jaylenosgarageofficial ABOUT JAY LENO'S GARAGE A new video every Monday!
