In show business, The Stars and Stripes Forever was called the “disaster march.” It served as a coded signal for life-threatening emergencies. The tune was intended to mobilize staff and minimize audience panic if things went disastrously wrong. In the 1940s, when a fire broke out at the Barnum & Bailey Circus, the band broke into America’s most patriotic march! Meanwhile, émigré virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz was lifting Allied spirits with his own dazzling rendition. But Horowitz’s arrangement for piano is best known as a celebration of the END of war, when the whole world was haloed in the hope of peace. This message is scored right into the music itself. In the irresistible trio, the thumbs share the theme. The piece is impossible to play without this cooperation. So it is a beautiful symbol of love, unity, and shared purpose. Sousa’s march is as popular as any of Johann Strauß’s marches, where I come from. Think the Radetsky march. And it has a bit of a Kaiserlich & Königlich feel to it. But I love how Sousa departed from that tradition. The piccolos and the anthem-like trio set it apart from the imperialistic bombast of Europe. The Stars & Stripes represents a plucky new brand of heart-stirring civic spirit that I have been blessed to experience over and over since my arrival here two weeks ago. In the 1980s, Danny Kaye conducted the New York Philharmonic, playing the Stars & Stripes. He introduced it like this: “… Many different nationalities, many different ethnic and religious groups, have all gravitated here, because there’s basic freedom. And in this orchestra itself, are people from faraway lands who have banded together in harmony to bring you music. There’s one piece of music that reflects the spirit of the United States more than any other” … the Stars & Stripes Forever. A timely message. © Sunny Ritter
