Why Scientists Can't Fully Explore The Jurassic Period Every Jurassic dinosaur you know is only a small slice of what was actually alive back then. For every one we've found, there were probably at least four more that never made it into the fossil record. Some of the ones we do know hang on almost nothing. One species rests on a single tooth smaller than a grain of rice, and a 30-foot predator from Australia is only known from footprints pressed into the ceilings of coal mines. This video is about why the Jurassic is so hard to find. Bones break down in about a decade, small animals almost never get preserved, and anything that lived far from a river barely had a chance. On top of that, most of what we know comes from a few lucky fossil sites. Then I use family trees, DNA and some strange clues to piece together what's still missing: the ancestor of a spiked ankylosaur from Morocco, a possible Jurassic spinosaur, gliding and swimming mammals, lizards in the treetops, the first flowering plants, and whatever lived up in the Jurassic hills, which never got turned into rock.
