Since June, over a hundred protesters have been killed and hundreds more have been arrested in clashes with Indian forces. After a clampdown, Kashmiris have for the most part been driven into their homes, but some have found other methods to have their voices heard. Meet 20 year old artist Roushan Illahi, popularly know these days in Indian Kashmir as MC Kash. He has gained a lot of fan base this year, inspiring people with his track "I protest ", which is about the deaths of innocent Kashmiris in the hands of government forces in the recent demonstrations. Kash is part of a new generation of Kashmiri artists who are fighting what they call the oppression imposed on them. He uses sharp words and beats instead of stones to protest Indian rule over the Muslim majority in the Himalayan region. Kash however says he can easily wind up in jail over his lyrics. There has been a tradition of writing protest songs in Kashmir, but most of the songs have been written in Urdu, the local language, but Kash this time has used English as a medium to communicate with the outside world: A student of business administration, Kash has been writing poetry since he was 10 year old; however he got inspiration to write more on the freedom of Kahsmir by watching a film on Israel's war with Palestinians in Gaza: He says soon after his song "I protest" got popular, his recording studio was raided and the people in charge of the studio were questioned by police. However Authorities deny going after those who are using the Internet or music as an outlet for their protests, saying their focus instead is on street protesters who hurl stones at law enforcement officers.
