I went looking for why nobody sells a small pickup anymore and ended up in a 1960s trade war over frozen chicken. That is not a joke. It's the actual reason. The short version: two rules did it. A 25% tariff from 1964 shut out cheap imported trucks and never went away. Then in 2011 the fuel economy rules switched to a formula based on how much floor space a vehicle covers — and because a bigger footprint means a weaker mpg target, building the small one became the expensive option. Ford had a good small Ranger ready to go that year. They didn't sell it here. The part I didn't expect was the blind zone. Consumer Reports measured up to 15 feet of road in front of a full-size pickup that the driver can't see. NBC lined up elementary school kids in front of an F-150 and it took nine of them before the driver could see a head. If your family had one of the old small ones — Ranger, S-10, the Toyota with no name — I'd like to hear what it was and what happened to it. Genuinely curious how many of those are still running. 📗 SOURCES Chicken Tax, 1964 (Proclamation 3564): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax https://www.hagerty.com/media/automotive-history/so-what-is-the-chicken-tax-anyway/ Footprint-based CAFE standards and the incentive to build bigger: https://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/good-and-bad-news-emerges-from-cafes-fine-print.html https://news.umich.edu/?p=20114 Hood height and pedestrian fatality risk (IIHS, ~18,000 crashes): https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/vehicles-with-higher-more-vertical-front-ends-pose-greater-risk-to-pedestrians Front blind zones on pickups (Consumer Reports): https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-safety/the-hidden-danger-of-big-pickup-trucks-a9662450602/ Frontover crashes and the NBC visibility demonstration: https://www.kidsandcars.org/news/americas-cars-and-trucks-are-getting-bigger-and-so-are-their-front-blind-zones
