It's operated from the crossing box located right next to it, also controlling Midgham and Thatcham Level Crossings and monitoring those to via CCTV, a crossing box where the crossing keeper has a very busy shift controlling the three due to how busy this line is with both passenger and freight traffic. They give 'slots' which allow the signaller at Thames Valley Signalling Centre in Didcot to clear the signals when the crossings are lowered and proven clear, a job which is rather constant with little opportunity to rest. The current set-up here dates back to the early 2010s from a full renewal. There used to be a footbridge here, though this has gone as part of the line electrification up to Newbury. A few shots from this crossing are featured in this video. The definite highlight catch, though, was the freight service seen in the third lowering. It was running a 45mph-only service from Merehead Quarry in Somerset to Colnbrook near Heathrow Airport, and this was a rather long, fully loaded and VERY heavy freight train (3800 tonnes!). I was reliably informed that it would be a double header due to how much this train is booked to haul, and indeed it was: 59 201 (the only DB-Red Class 59) and 66 589 can be seen doing the duties here, although running rather late. They were held at Newbury whilst a faster train which got stuck behind them was allowed past. The featured person mentioned above is the very friendly crossing keeper here, who was working this very busy box on this day.
