In this video, I am going to break down David Corenswets workout and diet for the incredible physique he achieved for the movie Superman. Just like I’ve done for every celebrity workout critique that I have done in the past, I am going to remain respectful and proud an unbiased review of David Corenswet’s workouts and diet. Not only that, I am going to explain how you can implement some of his principles into your training and nutrition so that you can see success as well. The reported Superman workout that David Corenswet performed to prepare for his role as the iconic superhero was put together with his trainer. Paolo Mascitti. According to Mascitti, Corenswet was training 5-6 days a week prior to shooting, with 3-4 session per week once filming again with workouts last around 2 hours. The workout split that Mascitti had Corenswet follow for his Superman workouts was a push / pull/ legs cycle. I love this split, especially done multiple times a week because it allows you to re-stimulate the muscles twice in a given week. Manscitti also said that he and Corenswet emphasized pressing, pulling, and squatting with progressive overload being the goal over the course of 6-12 reps per set. Some of the exercises that you can see Coreswet going in preparation for his role of Superman included seated cable rows, smith machine bench presses, pullups and back squats as well as a lateral raises done with dumbbells and cables. These are great exercises for packing on muscle and I want to highlight the emphasis they put on David’s shoulders. Having large, capped delts can give a strong, muscular appearance. With the Superman suit on, you can see Corenswet’s shoulders really popping - making him look like the man of steel. As far as Corenswet’s diet to prepare for Superman, he reportedly bulked up to 238 lbs prior to shooting. To do this, he was apparently eating between 4,500 and 6,000 calories per day. His diet was said to contain 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat. While I understand the need for a larger share of carbohydrates for someone that is training hard, I would have liked to seen more protein included in his Superman diet plan. Having said that, he did aim for .75 - 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight with the goal of that protein coming from whole foods and protein shakes. One of his purported breakfasts included 6 egg white, 2 whole eggs, 1.5-2 cups of oats, greek yogurt with berries and almonds, and a protein shake. Corenswet, as he got closer to filming, then cut his caloric intake to about 3,500 calories per day in order to cut some of the fat that he accumulated over the course of his preparation and bring his bodyweight down to around 228 lbs. Here’s where I have an issue. Bulking that much may will certainly lead to size and weight gains, but you have to remember, the majority of that is going to be fat. The amount of muscle someone can put on in the timeframe that Corenswet did is going to be limited. However, the amount of fat that gets put on will be substantial. Now, I’m not saying that David Corenswet’s Superman diet got him fat, but when looking at his before and after photos, you can see that he did gain fat in the process of gaining muscle. I never advocate for bulking and cutting and would prefer to see you build muscle and burn fat at the same time, but it comes down to what you’re eating first and foremost. Now, when it comes to his “natural status” and whether or not David took PEDs, it is certainly possible but I don’t think it is probable. The transformation that Corenswet underwent shows a significant size increase, but it also shows an increase in body fat. If he was to gain as much weight and muscle as he did without putting on any appreciable body fat, then I would be more inclined to say that he did - but that’s not the case. Overall, I think David Corenswet’s Superman transformation is pretty solid, with me taking only slight issue on his diet and nutrition - namely bulking and cutting for the role, however, I understand why he and his trainer took this approach to get him ready for Superman. if you are looking for a step-by-step workout program with a meal plan included, be sure to head over to athleanx.com and use the program selector to find the program that best matches your current training goal and ability levels.
