#PalmJumeirah #Dubai #SinkingIsland Two numbers are aimed at each other in the Persian Gulf. The island: settling downward at roughly 5 millimeters per year, according to satellite radar measurements by European survey firm Fugro NPA. The sea: rising more than 3 millimeters per year to meet it. Between those two numbers sit $12 billion, 94 million cubic meters of dredged sand, 7 million tons of rock, thousands of luxury villas, the Atlantis resort β and one of the most famous artificial objects human beings have ever built. Palm Jumeirah was crowned the eighth wonder of the world. The developer says it is intact. The surveyors stood by their measurements. And a few miles offshore, 300 sister islands shaped like a map of the world are already dissolving β a claim made in a courtroom, visible from a satellite. This is the confirmed, documented story of what the ocean is doing to Dubai's islands β told through the evidence. ποΈ THE EVIDENCE FILE EXHIBIT A β The construction: marine sand only. Desert sand, polished round by millennia of wind, cannot lock together β so every grain was dredged wet from the seabed and rainbow-sprayed into a palm shape by GPS-guided ships. The villas on the fronds stand on vibro-compacted fill, not bedrock. EXHIBIT B β The first failures: the 11-kilometer crescent breakwater sealed the lagoons so completely the water began to stagnate β engineers had to cut gaps into a breakwater they had just finished. Living coral reefs and seagrass beds were buried under the fill. Neighboring Dubai beaches began eroding as deflected currents hunted for new sand. EXHIBIT C β The satellite war: from 2003β2008, Fugro NPA's interferometric radar tracked the island settling ~5mm/year and warned of future flood risk. Nakheel called the findings "wholly inaccurate" β in the same period Dubai World was freezing payments on $59 billion of debt. Fugro's project manager, on the record: "We stand by our measurements." Nakheel's own spokesman acknowledged the island "has settled slightlyβ¦ in line with all artificially created land masses." EXHIBIT D β The proof next door: Palm Jebel Ali, larger than Jumeirah, sat as bare, unmaintained sand for 15 years after the 2008 crash. The World β 300 islands sold as private countries β was claimed in court proceedings to be gradually eroding and slipping back into the sea, its channels silting shut. The developer denied it. The satellite photos blurred anyway. EXHIBIT E β The forever bill: survey boats, dredgers, and repair crews work Dubai's islands continuously β beach replenishment, breakwater reinforcement, constant measurement β against Shamal storms in one of the shallowest, fastest-warming seas on Earth. A reclaimed island is not a possession. It is a subscription. π THE MATH ~5mm/year settling + ~3mm/year sea rise = nearly 1 centimeter of closing gap per year β roughly a meter per century β on a low-built island only a few meters above the waterline, before a single storm surge. It is the same equation forcing Jakarta to move a national capital and pushing the ocean up through Miami's limestone. Dubai had all of that data β and bet $12 billion that maintenance beats mathematics forever. π SOURCES Fugro NPA Satellite Mapping β InSAR ground stability study of Palm Jumeirah, 2003β2008 PropertyWire (propertywire.com) β Fugro findings and Nakheel response, December 2009 Arabian Business (arabianbusiness.com) β Nakheel denial and Dubai World debt coverage NuWire Investor (nuwireinvestor.com) β Β£12bn island subsidence reporting Greenpeace East Asia (issuu.com/greenpeace_eastasia) β reclaimed land case studies: Palm Jumeirah and The World The Guardian (theguardian.com) β The World islands courtroom erosion claims NASA Earth Observatory (earthobservatory.nasa.gov) β satellite imagery of the Palm Islands and The World NOAA (noaa.gov) β regional sea level rise data Baird Maritime (bairdmaritime.com) β Dubai World Palm island subsidence study coverage Nakheel public statements β official developer position #PalmJumeirah #Dubai #SinkingIsland #TheWorldIslands #PalmJebelAli #Nakheel #FugroNPA #InSAR #ArtificialIsland #LandReclamation #DubaiRealEstate #Atlantis #ManMadeIsland #SeaLevelRise #PersianGulf #ArabianGulf #RainbowDredging #VibroCompaction #CoastalEngineering #DubaiWorld #DebtCrisis #EighthWonder #LuxuryVillas #ClimateChange #Subsidence #ErosionCrisis #MegaprojectFailure #EngineeringDocumentary #DubaiIslands #SinkingCity
