Have you ever noticed how the borders of the Middle East look strangely straight on the map? Unlike most regions of the world where borders follow mountains, rivers, or cultural lines, the borders of countries like Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia appear almost perfectly straight. That’s because many of them were not created by the people who lived there. In 1916, during World War I, two diplomats — Mark Sykes and François Georges‑Picot met in secret and drew lines across the Middle East on a map. This secret deal became known as the Sykes‑Picot Agreement. The agreement planned how Britain and France would divide the lands of the collapsing Ottoman Empire after World War I. But there was one major problem. At the same time Britain was promising Arab leaders independence through the Hussein‑McMahon Correspondence. When the secret agreement was later revealed after the Bolshevik Revolution and published in the newspaper Pravda, it shocked the entire Arab world. This video explores: • The secret meeting that divided the Middle East • The promises made to Arab leaders • How the borders of modern countries were shaped • Why conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and Palestine are often linked to this moment in history If you want to understand modern geopolitics, Middle East conflicts, and the hidden history behind today's borders, this story is essential You can read the historical documents and sources here: • Original Sykes-Picot Agreement documents (Yale Avalon Project) https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/sykes.asp • History of the Sykes-Picot Agreement explained (History.com) https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/britain-and-france-conclude-sykes-picot-agreement • Britannica research article on Sykes-Picot Agreement https://www.britannica.com/event/Sykes-Picot-Agreement These sources explain how Britain and France secretly planned to divide the Middle East during World War I. 00:00 Introduction – The Lines in the Sand 03:04 Chapter 1 – The Secret Architects of the Middle East 08:12 Chapter 2 – The Double Game of Britain 11:58 Chapter 3 – The Sykes-Picot Map & Modern Conflicts sykes picot agreement explained middle east borders history who created middle east borders britain france middle east deal sykes picot map explained history of middle east borders ottoman empire collapse middle east geopolitics explained arab revolt history secret treaties world war 1 middle east documentary #MiddleEastHistory #SykesPicot #Geopolitics #WorldWar1 #HistoryExplained #MiddleEastConflict #HiddenHistory #IslamicHistory #HistoryDocumentary Copyright Disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976: This video may contain archival footage, historical images, and materials used for educational and commentary purposes under fair use.
