Revenge of the Mummy has been one of Universal Studios Hollywood’s most recognizable thrill rides for more than two decades, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes that most riders never notice. In this episode of How It Worked, we’re going through the complete history of Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Hollywood, how the attraction was created, how the ride system works, and the technology Universal uses to make a relatively compact indoor roller coaster feel much bigger, faster and more chaotic than it actually is. Revenge of the Mummy opened in 2004 as Universal transformed part of the Lower Lot into a high-speed indoor coaster inspired by The Mummy films. Unlike a traditional roller coaster, the attraction combines dark ride scenes, animatronics, projection, lighting, synchronized audio, launches and coaster track inside a completely enclosed show building. One of the biggest parts of the experience is the launch. Instead of slowly climbing a lift hill, the ride vehicle accelerates into darkness while lighting, sound and the surrounding scenery make it difficult to understand exactly where the track is going next. With almost no visual reference points, even relatively short sections of track can feel much faster than they would outdoors. We also break down how Universal uses darkness to hide the size and layout of the attraction, allowing scenes to reset and keeping riders from seeing upcoming track or effects before they are supposed to. Throughout the ride, Imhotep appears through a combination of physical scenery, figures, projections and carefully timed effects designed to work with the position of each train. Revenge of the Mummy also uses onboard audio and synchronized sound effects to make every launch, turn and sudden movement feel more aggressive. When the ride accelerates, the audio reacts with it. When the vehicle stops or changes direction, lighting and sound help sell the illusion that something inside the tomb is controlling the train. The Hollywood version of Revenge of the Mummy is also very different from the attraction at Universal Orlando. Although both rides share the same basic theme and characters, they use different layouts, scenes and ride systems. Over the years, Revenge of the Mummy has become one of the longest-running major thrill attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood and remains a huge part of the Lower Lot alongside Jurassic World: The Ride and TRANSFORMERS: The Ride–3D. In this video, we look at how Revenge of the Mummy was designed, how its launch system works, how Universal hides the coaster track inside the building, how the dark ride effects are synchronized with the vehicles, and why the attraction still feels so intense more than 20 years after opening.
