Gen Z controls trillions in consumer spending. Eric Dawson of RIVET turns a slice of it into micro funding for young changemakers, because philanthropy barely funds youth-led social entrepreneurship. "Every generation claims they want to leave a better world for their children, yet Gen Z has inherited crumbling climate systems, unaffordable economies, and broken institutions. But they aren't waiting around for corporate permission or political promises. Today on TBLI Radical Truth, Robert Rubinstein sits down with 30-year social innovator Eric Dawson to reveal how Gen Z is bypassing traditional gatekeepers to create genuine systemic change." This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Dawson had a consultancy study a century of movements that actually changed something, from the weekend to the Arab Spring. The only common factor was young people at the centre. He then puts a number on the gap: roughly 700 billion dollars was given away philanthropically last year, and by his estimate under 0.002% of it reached early stage youth-led social innovation. RIVET is his answer to that market failure, and the twist is who pays for it. Gen Z and Gen Alpha controlled 3 trillion dollars of consumer spending in 2020, heading for 12 trillion by 2030, so the fund is raised from what young people already buy. Eric Dawson founded Peace First and ran it for 30 years across 166 countries. He is now founder and CEO of RIVET, a micro funding platform that has made over 1,100 grants, most of them under 1,000 dollars. WHAT'S COVERED - Three things people do with childhood trauma, and why he calls the third one transformation - Why prizes, pitch competitions and accelerators are step 100 of a founder's journey, not step one - The first yes: a few hundred dollars, no real application, succeed or fail, we want to learn either way - The capital ladder from under 1,000 dollars, to a boost grant under 10,000, to a scale grant under 100,000 - Why 85% of the world's two billion under-30s live in what he calls a capital desert - Walter in rural Uganda: 250 dollars, four pedal sewing machines, and reusable menstrual pads - "If you can't be pure, be honest", and how they actually screen brands - Keeping 10% of brand revenue, and why he expects to be a profitable nonprofit by 2028 Clder generations created systemic crises across climate, economics, and governance—then told Gen Z to fix it with fewer resources and broken institutions. But what if the next generation isn’t waiting for permission to rebuild the system? In this episode of TBLI Radical Truth, Robert Rubinstein sits down with social innovator and youth leadership pioneer Eric Dawson (Peace First, The Rivet). Drawing on over 30 years of empowering young changemakers, Dawson breaks down why traditional institutions fail youth, how Gen Z is fundamentally altering power dynamics, and the exact tools needed to turn generational frustration into transformative, systemic solutions. 00:00 - The Generational Dilemma: Handing Broken Systems to Gen Z 08:30 - Eric Dawson's 30-Year Journey: From Anger to Action 19:15 - Why Traditional Institutions Fail Young Changemakers 31:40 - Gen Z’s Superpower: Dismantling Legacy Hierarchies 42:10 - Moving Beyond Performative Activism to Real Impact 51:30 - Building the Infrastructure for Next-Gen Systemic Change 📌 Subscribe to TBLI Radical Truth for unfiltered, deep-dive discussions with sustainable finance thought leaders challenging the conventional narratives around impact and the future of finance. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDBhRVM93uUnAAtqOMIz_yg?sub_confirmation=1 EXTRACTION How business takes your money, your work, your resources, your data and your future, while presenting itself as something else entirely.
