The masterfully designed large sprites of the boxers along with each of them having their own fighting style brought not only an addictive challenge to us as players, but it established depth and even a personal connection to these characters that still holds true over 30 years later. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out fans experienced a brief glimmer of hope in an article from Electronic Gaming Monthly documenting upcoming Nintendo games from the 1991 Winter Consumer Electronics show. A new NES boxing game named Mike Tyson’s Intergalactic Power Punch was featured stating it was similar to Punch-Out and you actually controlled Tyson in this game. But when this game was eventually released in 1992, Mike Tyson’s name and likeness had been dropped and the game was now titled Power Punch II and faded into obscurity shortly after its launch. The story of Power Punch II’s development and relationship to Nintendo is controversial and not well understood.
