On 11 April 2010, metal detectorist Dave Crisp made an extraordinary discovery in a field near Frome, Somerset. Around 35 cm below the surface, he uncovered a Roman coin and the top of a huge buried pottery vessel. Realizing there was far more beneath the ground, he stopped digging and reported the find. Archaeologists excavated the site between 23 and 25 April, carefully removing the contents layer by layer. Inside the pot were 52,503 Roman coins, weighing around 160 kg in total. The coins were minted between approximately AD 253 and 293 and represented 21 emperors and three emperors’ wives, reflecting one of the most turbulent periods in Roman history. Among them were 766 coins of Carausius, the breakaway Roman emperor who ruled Britain and parts of northern Gaul from AD 286 to 293. The hoard also contained five extremely rare silver denarii of Carausius. The arrangement of the coins was particularly interesting. The newest coins were found partway down the vessel rather than simply at the top, suggesting the money had been poured in from several separate containers. Because of the enormous weight, archaeologists believe the pot was probably buried first and then filled with coins while already in the ground. The Frome Hoard remains the largest Roman coin hoard ever discovered in Britain inside a single container. Why such an enormous fortune was buried is still debated. Rather than being money hidden for later recovery, some archaeologists have suggested it may have been a deliberate ritual or votive deposit.
