The investigation began around 3:23 p.m., when West Richland police responded to reports of a shooting outside Wiley Elementary School during afternoon dismissal. When officers arrived, they discovered 31-year-old Amber Rodriguez outside the school. Unfortunately, she did not survive. Making the situation even more heartbreaking, investigators learned that the couple's 9-year-old son had reportedly witnessed the incident. As officers secured the school and began speaking with witnesses and family members, they identified the suspect as Amber's ex-husband, Elias Huizar, a former police officer who had previously worked for the Yakima Police Department. Investigators also learned that Huizar had recently been facing serious criminal charges involving two teenage girls. One of them was his 17-year-old girlfriend, who had reportedly met him while he was working as a school resource officer. But the investigation soon took another disturbing turn. When detectives executed a search warrant at Huizar's home, they discovered his 17-year-old girlfriend, Angelica Santos, had also been found deceased.
