In honor of the recent 80th anniversary of the premier of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, Dr. Jonathan Sokasits, Hastings College Professor of Piano, released this version, recorded in the summer of 2017. It includes Michael Lippard on clarinet, Kristin Mortenson on violin and Jackie Wogick on cello. A note from Dr. Sokasits, followed by movement titles: In times of great tribulation, artists often turn to many sources—art, nature, and spirituality—to help them make sense of and process the trials that they are undergoing. The Quartet for the End of Time is Messiaen’s response to the horrors of World War II. He turned to his art, including explorations of novel modes and Greek and Indian rhythms; his fascination with nature, especially notating bird calls; and his deep and abiding Catholic mysticism when he was taken a prisoner of war by the Nazis. The uncommon instrumentation used in this piece is borne of the circumstances of captivity. The composer Messiaen was an organist and a pianist; among his fellow inmates were a violinist, a cellist, and a clarinetist. The musicians had assistance from some sympathetic prison guards. Messiaen was given pencils and manuscript paper and time to compose. The musicians were given time to rehearse and then present the premiere performance of this piece for the guards and inmates at the prisoner of war camp. Messiaen deploys these forces in very innovative ways. At times, the four members of the quartet play completely unrelated ideas with each other, as in the very first movement, which seems to capture the random gentle awakenings of birds at three in the morning. At other times, as in the sixth movement, all four players are playing exactly the same themes at the same time for the entire movement. Not every movement involves all four players. The third movement is scored for unaccompanied clarinet, and the fourth movement, a brief, light intermezzo, features the three players minus the piano. The fifth movement is a solo for cello and piano, and the eighth movement is for solo violin and piano. This piece traverses a very wide spectrum of emotions. It ranges from quiet meditation to stark terror to ecstatic reflections on the divine. This comes at a time in history when many thought the world would be ending—hence the title. Because of that, Messiaen liberally quotes from the Book of Revelation in the titles and prefatory notes.
