It is the add-on that makes the sim feel like a real airspace, and it is doing a lot of the work in this video. Today Storm Austen hit the Channel Islands. Jersey Met issued a Red Wind Warning, the highest category they have. Gusts topped 80 miles an hour. Every flight out of Jersey was cancelled, Guernsey and Alderney shut, the harbour closed, the schools closed. So obviously I filed a flight plan into it. Cardiff to Jersey, in a Ryanair 737-800, straight into the worst of it, while I was recording. For reference, a 737-800 is cleared for something around 33 to 36 knots of crosswind. Jersey was reporting gusts of 59 and the tower was calling 63 on final. What happened in between was the strangest flying I have ever done. On the way down we had a 70 knot tailwind, so we were showing 160 knots on the airspeed indicator and 230 over the ground, unable to slow down. Then we turned into it and the ground speed collapsed to 66 knots. A Boeing 737 moving at Cessna speeds, hanging almost stationary over the sea, stalling repeatedly, with the autopilot wandering off the localiser because it had no idea what to do. I ended up hand flying it, crabbed into a 63 knot crosswind, and the aircraft stopped almost the moment it touched down because the headwind was doing most of the braking for me. Then I could not taxi, because the wind kept pushing the aeroplane sideways across the apron. One of the worst flights of my simulated career. Genuinely hope everyone in Jersey and the Channel Islands came through it all right.
