The political tension in Punganur constituency of Annamayya district has reportedly escalated into violent incidents following a call allegedly made by former YSRCP minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy and his son, Rajampet MP Peddireddy Mithun Reddy, urging party workers to retain control over the constituency regardless of whether the party is in power. Their message was reportedly that the constituency and its mandals must not slip out of their hands. Against this backdrop, YSRCP workers have been accused of attacking TDP candidates and supporters with stones and sticks as they were heading to file nominations for MPTC and ZPTC elections. Speaking at a YSRCP meeting in Chowdepalle, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy reportedly said that his family had maintained political dominance in Punganur since he entered politics and that the constituency must remain under their control. He assured party workers that they should file their nominations without fearing TDP and said he would take responsibility for ensuring their victory. Rajampet MP Mithun Reddy also reportedly urged YSRCP workers not to be afraid of TDP, claiming that false cases would not stop them. Both leaders allegedly encouraged party workers with the message, “Your responsibility is to file the nominations; ours is to ensure victory.” Following these speeches, the nomination process reportedly turned violent in several mandals across the constituency. In Punganur, YSRCP workers allegedly pelted TDP supporters with stones. At Nadigadda in Sadum mandal, a car belonging to Pawan Kumar Reddy was reportedly set on fire, while Shiv Anand was allegedly attacked near a nomination centre. YSRCP leaders Komiri Ramana, Kapadimitlapalle Venkataramana and associates of Kanchi have also been accused of attacking TDP workers with sticks, stones and bottles while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, leaving several people seriously injured. In connection with the disturbances during Punganur municipal nominations, police reportedly named MP Mithun Reddy as Accused No. 1 (A1) in three cases. Cases have reportedly been registered against a total of 160 people. Meanwhile, at Thummarakunta in Peddathippasamudram mandal, a confrontation reportedly broke out after TDP candidates Manjula and Savithramma filed their nominations, involving supporters of a YSRCP worker named Roopa. YSRCP supporters alleged that TDP workers had torn up their nomination papers. However, TDP supporters alleged that YSRCP workers subsequently attacked Savithramma's house at night. Sub-Inspector Paramesh Naik has reportedly initiated an investigation into the incident. In another development, police have allegedly registered what TDP leaders describe as a false case against Srinivasulu Naidu, chairman of the Somala Market Committee, who filed his nomination as an MPTC candidate from Irikipenta. Local residents have expressed concern that the disturbing conditions witnessed during the 2021 elections could be repeated. Critics accuse YSRCP workers of undermining democracy through alleged intimidation of candidates, misuse of SC/ST cases and coercion involving cases related to Karnataka liquor.
