What’s my problem with the 30-06? It’s probably not what you think. The ’06 is one of the most iconic hunting cartridges of all time. Ballistically, it can do damn near anything in the woods and field and has. But I still don’t like it. I won’t hunt with it. And I don’t even mind saying I hate it. Why? Well, check out the video for the exact reason. Ballistics matter—things like caliber, trajectory, velocity, energy, sectional density, and ballistic coefficients help us determine if a cartridge is suitable for what we’re hunting. But we can argue ballistics around a campfire at hunting camp. How we feel about things, including rifle cartridges, isn’t up for debate. Our emotions are ours alone and don’t have to survive ballistic scrutiny. If your favorite pro football team is the Cleveland Browns, or if you hate the New England Patriots, no one can tell you shouldn’t. We like what we like for our own reasons. I’m betting that just like with me, there are rifle cartridge you like and don’t like, for reasons that have nothing to do with ballistics or efficacy. Maybe you like the 7mm-08 Remington because your dad swore by it, or maybe you hate the 6.5 Creedmoor because you’re just so damned sick of hearing about it. One of the great things about rifle cartridges is that we get to feel any way we want about any of them. And, fortunately, there are so many capable rifle cartridges to choose from, there’s something out there for everyone to like. Or hate.
