The grand celebrations of the Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Jatara, the revered presiding deity of North Andhra and the guardian goddess of the Vizianagaram royal family, are taking place with great devotion and splendour. The first-day Tholేళ్ల Utsavam (Tholella Festival) has already concluded in a grand manner. Today, the most important event of the festival, the Sirimanotsavam, was celebrated with magnificent arrangements and attracted thousands of devotees. The festival has a history spanning several centuries and is directly associated with the historic Battle of Bobbili, fought in 1757. According to local tradition, after hearing the news that Vijayarama Raju, the ruler of Vizianagaram, had died in the battle, his sister Paidimamba was overcome with grief and sacrificed her life in Pedda Cheruvu. Later, she appeared in a dream to a soldier named Pativada Appala Naidu and revealed that her idol was located in the western part of Pedda Cheruvu. She instructed him to recover the idol, build a temple and worship her. Following the goddess's instructions, the idol was retrieved with the help of fishermen and installed for worship, marking the beginning of the festival's long-standing tradition. Several unique customs and traditions are associated with this festival. One special feature is that Vizianagaram has two temples dedicated to the goddess. The temple located at the place where the idol was discovered is known as Vanam Gudi, while the main temple near the Three Lanterns Junction, where the procession concludes, is called Chaduru Gudi. The descendants of the Pativada family, who discovered the idol during the period of the Battle of Bobbili, continue to serve as hereditary priests and perform rituals for the goddess even today. Coming to the celebrations, the Tholేళ్ల Utsavam was held on Monday night, during which farmers performed special prayers for the first ploughing of the agricultural season. Members of the Pusapati Gajapathi royal family also presented silk garments to the goddess. On Tuesday, the entire city of Vizianagaram was beautifully illuminated with decorative lights as the main event, the Sirimanotsavam, took place in a grand manner. The priest, seated on the nearly 60-foot-tall Sirimanu, blessed devotees by showering sacred rice grains upon them, symbolising the divine power of the goddess. Ahead of the Sirimanu procession, several ceremonial structures moved in an orderly sequence, including the fishermen's net, the Paladhara chariot, the white elephant chariot and the Anjali chariot. Devotees believe that the goddess herself reveals the location of the tree required for preparing the Sirimanu through a dream to the priest. Farmers also believe that collecting the sacred rice grains and seeds showered by the priest during the procession and scattering them in their fields will bring abundant harvests. In the coming days, the month-long festival will conclude with several traditional ceremonies, including the Teppotsavam (float festival) at Pedda Cheruvu, the Kalasha Jyothi procession, the Uyala Kambala Mahotsavam and the Purnahuthi. Accompanied by traditional performances such as Tappeta Gullu dances and tiger dances, the festival has drawn lakhs of devotees to Vizianagaram from across the Telugu states and neighbouring Odisha. #SriPydithalliAmmavaru #PydithalliAmmavariJatara #Vizianagaram #PydithalliAmmavaruJatara #Sirimanotsavam2026 #AndhraPradesh #PusapatiGajapathi #ThollelaUtsavam #VanamGudi #ChaduruGudi #BobbiliWar #JataraCelebrations #thinkandhra For More Updates Follow Us On : Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ThinkAndhraOfficial/ Twitter : https://x.com/think_andhra Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thinkandhra/ WhatsApp : https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaznDVzCHDyg8PmAYe0z
