Symphony 8 in Db, one 39 minutes movement, written in June 2022. For this symphony, I chose to write one only movement of 39 minutes, in my usual tri thematic form, to gather all the elements into a concentrated story. The 3 themes are incorporated into a sequential frame, and are declined into several secondary variations, as inversion, fragmentation, rhythmic, and these shapes underline the inside unity, in spite of the strong contrasts and multiples characters. This single movement option is as much interesting as the standard 4-5 movements, but more challenging, as the unusually long duration has to be in harmony, concerning the thematic developments, weight balance, and architecture. The splendid photography used here will give hints about the underlying inspiration of this symphony. The slow progression towards a firm Db, briefly exposed in the beginning, then recalling itself more and more until culminating in the long end crescendo, serve the main purpose of this work. After completion, I was tempted to write 3 more movements, the richness of the thematic materials calling for much more developments and options. But then the whole symphony would have had a duration of 80 minutes, which is not to displease me, but then walking away from the core intention. Meanwhile, I will take this long option for a next symphony, being totally in the agreement and disposition of such timeless developments, as did Bruckner in his time.
