Here’s how to check your whole house in about 30 minutes. Find your sewer cleanout. It’s the capped pipe sticking out of the ground near your house. Every drain in the home flows through it, so it’s the easiest place to see if water is running when it shouldn’t be. This works whether you’re on city sewer or septic. Turn off every faucet and anything that uses water on its own. That means the dishwasher, washer, ice maker, water softener, and sprinklers. If anything is running, the test won’t tell you much. Open the cap and sprinkle a little Kool-Aid powder inside the pipe. Come back in about 30 minutes. If there’s a clean line cut through the Kool-Aid, water is flowing down the drain with nothing turned on. Something in the house is leaking. Screw the cap back on tight when you’re done. The most common culprit is the toilet flapper. When it wears out or doesn’t seal, water slowly seeps from the tank into the bowl. You won’t hear it, but it can waste a lot of water over time. To find which toilet it is, put some Kool-Aid in the tank and don’t flush. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, that’s your leaky toilet. Flush when you’re done so it doesn’t stain. A new flapper is cheap and one of the easiest plumbing fixes there is. One limit to know. This test only catches water going down a drain. A leak in a supply line under the slab or inside a wall won’t show up here. For that, turn everything off and watch the leak indicator on your water meter.
