This is the true story of Gino Bartali β€” winner of the Tour de France and three-time Giro d'Italia champion β€” who spent eighteen months under Nazi occupation riding forged identity papers through Gestapo checkpoints inside the hollow frame of his racing bicycle, and never told a single person about it, including his own wife, for the rest of his life. Spring 1944, on the road outside Florence. A Gestapo patrol stops a man in a yellow jersey with BARTALI stitched across the chest. The commander recognises him instantly β€” he watched Bartali win the 1938 Tour de France with his father β€” and asks for an autograph. While the officer writes, twelve forged Italian identity cards and seven baptismal certificates for Jewish children are rolled up inside the seat-post of the bicycle he is leaning on. It began in September 1943, in the chancery of Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa, the Archbishop of Florence. German forces had just occupied northern Italy. The SS had begun deportations. An underground Catholic-Jewish network was forging documents in a Franciscan monastery in Assisi, 185 kilometres away β€” and needed a courier who could not be searched. The perfect cover had already been written by the Germans themselves. Bartali was classified a "cyclist of national importance" and granted unrestricted travel papers on the condition that he keep training for postwar international races. So the most famous athlete in Italy simply rode β€” 185 km to Assisi, 85 to Lucca, 240 to Genoa β€” roughly once a week, for eighteen months. He crossed around 160 checkpoints. He was stopped at nine out of ten. And every time, he repeated the same sentence: do not touch the bicycle, every component is adjusted to my exact body β€” move one screw and my training is ruined for weeks. In eighteen months, not a single German or Italian soldier ever took the bike apart. In May 1944 the fascist secret police arrested him and interrogated him for three days inside Villa Triste β€” the House of Sorrow. Their commander had a signed Bartali photograph in his desk drawer. On the third day, he let him walk out. Bartali collected the next batch of documents the following morning. Around 800 Jewish lives were saved through the network he served. Four years later, at 34 and written off as too old, he won the 1948 Tour de France β€” while Italy stood hours from civil war after an assassination attempt in Rome, and the country stopped to listen to the radio instead. And then he said nothing. Not to journalists, not to his children, not to his wife. When his son finally pressed him in 1989, Bartali said only that if you do good, you don't talk about it. The full story emerged only after his death β€” and in 2013 Yad Vashem named him Righteous Among the Nations, the only Tour de France champion ever to receive it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 00:00 β€” HOOK 01:42 β€” The Boy From Ponte a Ema 03:39 β€” The First Cyclist 05:59 β€” The Method 08:35 β€” The Network 11:39 β€” The Arrest 14:25 β€” The Tour 17:34 β€” The Silence ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ MORE FROM AGO Subscribe for more true stories about impossible survival, war, crime, scams, hidden systems, strange history, and ordinary people who found themselves inside moments bigger than their own lives.
