This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Yost Chi Khitan Language: The Khitan language was spoken by the Khitan people, a nomadic people who established the Liao Dynasty (907–1125) in northern China. It is considered a now-extinct language with uncertain classification—often described as a para-Mongolic language, meaning it is closely related to but distinct from Mongolic languages. The Khitans developed two unique scripts: the Khitan large script (logographic, resembling Chinese) and the Khitan small script (syllabic or alphabetic), both of which remain only partially deciphered. The language vanished after the fall of the Liao Dynasty and the assimilation of the Khitan people into other cultures, particularly after some migrated west and founded the Western Liao (Qara Khitai) in Central Asia. Khitan People and Culture: The Khitan were a nomadic people originally from the region that is now northeastern China (Manchuria). They rose to power in the 10th century, founding the Liao Dynasty, which ruled over parts of northern China and Mongolia. Their culture blended nomadic traditions—such as horseback riding, archery, and clan-based organization—with Chinese influences due to their governance over sedentary Han populations. The Khitans maintained a dual administrative system: one for their nomadic Khitan subjects and another for the Han Chinese, reflecting their multicultural empire. Their religious beliefs included Buddhism, shamanism, and ancestor worship. After their decline, many Khitans assimilated into neighboring populations, but their legacy lived on in regional names like “Cathay,” a medieval European name for China derived from “Khitan.” This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented.
