How to Fit a BMW E36 GT Wing on a Compact 318ti | DIY LTW Spoiler Install Guide | 009 In this video we take on the challenge of fitting a BMW E36 GT spoiler, also known in the United States as an LTW wing, to an E36 Compact 318Ti. #ad Here's what we used in this video (affiliate links). As an eBay Partner Network affiliate and Amazon Associate, we earn commissions from qualifying purchases: - Here is the exact same ABS plastic GT wing we installed in the video: https://ebay.us/TMvEEG - And the step drill bits for making the holes: https://ebay.us/S3qQz3 Thanks for supporting the channel! At first glance it might seem impossible because the spoiler was originally designed for the coupĂ© boot lid rather than the hatchback of the compact. The different shapes mean the base of the wing does not sit correctly and interferes with the rear glass. Rather than abandoning the idea, we set about modifying the spoiler to make it fit properly and look as though it was made for the car. The spoiler we used is an aftermarket ABS plastic version, not fibreglass. This is important because ABS plastic can be reshaped with heat. Using a controlled temperature heat gun, we softened the base of the spoiler and carefully re-moulded it so that it followed the line of the compact’s boot lid. Once cooled, the plastic retained its new shape, giving us the clearance we needed from the rear window and allowing the spoiler to sit flush with the hatch. This is not something that can be done with fibreglass, so if you are planning to carry out the same modification you must ensure that you purchase an ABS plastic version. We have included a link to the exact spoiler we used in the description. With the spoiler reshaped, the next task was mounting it securely to the car. We show the whole process in detail, from marking up the positions to drilling pilot holes and then stepping up to the correct size for the bolts. On the compact hatch there is additional complexity because of the internal box sections, so access is not as straightforward as it would be on a coupĂ©. To overcome this we created neat access holes which can later be finished with rubber grommets, making the installation not only strong but also tidy. We explain every step clearly in the video so that you can follow along and avoid mistakes, and we also highlight the measurements we used to ensure the spoiler sat square and centred. Once the GT wing was bolted into place, the transformation of the car’s appearance was immediate. It completely changes the proportions of the compact and makes it look far more aggressive, while still being a period correct modification that BMW themselves offered on certain models in the nineties. To complement the rear wing we also fitted period style corner splitters to the front bumper, again using original mounting points for a factory-style finish. The combination of these changes gives the 318Ti a motorsport-inspired look that ties in with the other upgrades we have already carried out, including coilovers, motorsport wheels, uprated seats and M3 mirrors. This video is not simply a cosmetic modification but also a detailed DIY guide for anyone who wants to attempt fitting a coupĂ© GT spoiler to their own E36 compact. The techniques shown, such as reshaping ABS plastic with heat and drilling through reinforced sections of the hatch, can be applied to many other projects where aftermarket parts need adapting to fit correctly. The compact in question is destined to become an M3 GT tribute car, finished in British Racing Green to echo the very limited edition original. Although BMW never built such a car in compact form, we think the combination of genuine period styling and unusual body shape will make it stand out as a unique project. This video represents the first step in that transformation. If you are interested in modifying your own E36 compact, want to learn how to install a GT or LTW style spoiler, or are simply curious to see the process of adapting coupĂ© parts to fit the hatchback, then this video will show you exactly what is involved. By the end you will see how achievable it is with the right parts, the right tools, and a little patience.
