The most disappointing thing I discovered spending time around people I considered heroes was not their flaws. It was that they could not scale beyond themselves. Every one of them had built something brilliant that required them to stay at the center of it. Which meant the ceiling of the business was the ceiling of the person running it. Bill Gates said the average code writer is worth one ten-thousandth of a great one. The super talents do not attach themselves to founders who need to be the centerpiece. They go where the vision is large enough to give them room. A goal built around the founder's identity cannot attract that. It repels it. I know a CEO who took a company from 4 million to 100 million in three years. When I asked what it would take to reach a billion, he said he might not be able to remain the CEO. That answer is rarer than the result. To scale at unbelievable levels the business has to be designed to operate beyond you. The goal has to be large enough that it forces you out of the centerpiece role entirely. If you are still the most important person in the room, the vision is not big enough.
