Players didn't notice an important engine overheating feature in our game. This is a big problem as the engine is a central game system of our game... Music: Can You Really Call This A Hotel, I Didn't Receive A Mint On My Pillow Or Anything - Undertale (Toby Fox) We recently discovered that players completely missed one of the core mechanics in our game. In our game, players need to fuel up the ship’s engine to keep it running, but to stop people from just filling it once and ignoring it forever, we added an overheating system. Every time fuel gets added, the engine heats up more and more until the ship starts becoming unstable and hard to control. The problem is… nobody realized overheating was even a thing. We only showed the heat with a tiny little meter under the engine, so whenever the ship started going crazy, players just assumed the controls were broken instead of understanding it was intentional gameplay. So we started reworking the feedback system. Now the engine itself visually changes as it gets hotter using a shader (unity shadergraph) that makes it appear red, so players can instantly tell when things are about to go very wrong. We’re also thinking about adding steam bursts, sparks, and other warning effects to make the engine feel like it’s about to explode at any second. This is the progress of our game All Rats on Deck! We’ve been developing it in Unity for about 3-4 months, and it’s been really fun seeing players accidentally break everything in ways we never expected. Our game All Rats on Deck is a friendslop online co-op game inspired by RV There Yet, Peak, and Sea of Thieves. Up to 4 players navigate a Steamboat while playing as hillbilly rats trying to get to reach open waters. Players have to work together to operate the ship, find fuel to feed the engine and overcome obstacles on dangerous waters. #gamedev #indiegame #games #gamedevelopment #gaming #gamedesign #unity #gameengines #gamedesign #unity3d #roblox #memes #pcgaming #coopgaming #friendslop
