What are the rarest things in the universe? From magnetars and wandering black holes to failed supernovas, interstellar objects, and the possibility of intelligent extraterrestrial life, the universe contains astronomical objects and phenomena so rare that we've discovered only a handful, or may have never found another example at all. Magnetars are an extremely rare type of neutron star with the strongest known magnetic fields in the universe. Their magnetic fields can be trillions of times stronger than Earth's, making them some of the most extreme objects ever discovered. Odd Radio Circles (ORCs) are enormous, mysterious rings of radio emission discovered in deep space. Only a small number are known, and astronomers are still working to determine exactly what creates these gigantic cosmic structures. Interstellar visitors are objects that originate beyond our solar system and pass through our cosmic neighborhood. Only a tiny number have been confirmed, including the famous interstellar object ʻOumuamua and the comet 2I/Borisov. Wandering black holes, also known as isolated or rogue black holes, travel through space without an obvious companion star revealing their presence. Because black holes emit no light of their own, finding one drifting alone through the galaxy is extraordinarily difficult. Failed supernovas may occur when massive stars collapse into black holes without producing the brilliant supernova explosion astronomers normally expect. Instead, a star can seemingly disappear from view, making these potential stellar deaths incredibly difficult to detect. Janus is an extraordinary white dwarf with two dramatically different faces, one dominated by hydrogen and the other by helium. This bizarre two-faced star appears to be transitioning between atmospheric states, making it unlike other white dwarfs astronomers have observed. And finally, technological life may be the rarest thing we've ever discovered in the universe. Despite searching the cosmos for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations, humanity still has no confirmed evidence of technological life anywhere beyond Earth, meaning that, for now, the rarest known thing in the universe may be us. 00:00 7 - Magnetars 1:38 6 - Odd Radio Circles 3:01 5 - Interstellar Visitors 5:00 4 - Wandering Black Holes 6:42 3 - Vanishing Stars 7:58 2 - Two Faced Stars 9:10 1 - Technological Life
