A pizzeria in Norwich, England put one pizza on its menu for £100 — so that nobody would order it. In January 2025, Lupa Pizza listed a Hawaiian pizza on Deliveroo for £100; its other pizzas cost around £12, and its owners said pineapple on pizza is a "fair price for bad taste". The fight is old: in 2017 Iceland's president said he'd ban pineapple on pizza if he could, and Canada's prime minister defended it. The usual story is Canadian: in 1962 Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant who ran the Satellite restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, tipped a can of pineapple onto a pizza "just for the fun of it" and named it after the label on the can. But nobody credited him until an anonymous Wikipedia edit on 15 July 2009 — with no source, and with the year 1960. And a "Hawaiian Pizza" was already on a menu in Portland, Oregon in 1957.
