It has quashed the NSA detention of Mulla Afroz and imposed ₹10 lakh in costs on the Uttar Pradesh government, holding that an alleged confession could not, by itself, justify preventive detention. The Court found that the preventive-detention order had been based on material that was legally insufficient, including an alleged confession. It also imposed ₹10 lakh in costs on the Uttar Pradesh government. *“डिटेंशन का एक कानून है जिसके तहत जिसको जेल में डाला जाता है वो बहुत लंबे वक्त तक जेल में रहता है उसकी बेल नहीं होती है” [00:07]* *[01:06] THE SAMBHAL VIOLENCE AND THE ALLEGATIONS* The case goes back to violence in Sambhal in November 2024, following a court-directed survey of the Jama Masjid. Four people were killed in the violence. Afroz was subsequently accused of being a key figure behind the violence. The detention was subsequently confirmed for 12 months.
