Imagine running into battle holding a 22-pound machine gun... and your commanding officer tells you to put a sword on it. Sounds insane, right? But during World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army actually did this. Their Type 96 and Type 99 light machine guns had built-in lugs designed specifically to mount a 16-inch bayonet. Was this practical? Not at all. The standard Type 30 bayonet, a long, sword-like blade measuring 16-inch (400 mm), was designed to fit standard Arisaka rifles as well as these light machine guns. While doctrinally reflecting Japanese military emphasis on close combat and aggressive infantry tactics, fixing a bayonet to light machine gun was largely impractical in actual combat. The heavy weight made thrusting awkward, and the blade was mostly obstructed by the gun's flash hider. The Japanese military doctrine heavily relied on the "cult of the offensive," believing that aggressive night attacks and fierce bayonet charges could overwhelm enemies who possessed superior firepower (like the United States). To the Japanese high command, every frontline soldier, whether carrying a bolt-action rifle, a pistol, or a machine gun, was expected to participate in a final melee charge if necessary. The designer of these machine guns, General Kijirō Nambu, was a traditionalist. He followed rigid Army specifications that dictated any infantry arm meant for the front lines should be capable of mounting the standard Type 30 bayonet. Because Japanese doctrine viewed the light machine gun as a weapon that advanced with the infantry squad (rather than firing from a static, defensive position), they insisted it be equipped for close-quarters fighting.
