This scene comes from After Life, the Netflix series created by and starring Ricky Gervais as Tony, a grieving newspaper writer struggling after the death of his wife. In this moment, Tony is looking after his young nephew George and takes him to a local cafe, where they both want the fish fingers and beans from the kids menu. The waitress refuses to let Tony, as an adult, order from the children’s section, leading to an increasingly stubborn back and forth between the two of them. Tony eventually gets around the rule by ordering two kids meals supposedly for his hungry nephew, then eats one himself while staring directly at the waitress the entire time out of pure spite. Gervais has said in interviews that this scenario is loosely based on something that actually happened to him, where a waitress similarly refused to let him order off the kids menu, though in real life he simply agreed and quietly ordered from the adult menu instead. The fictional version lets Tony’s character act out the petty, confrontational reaction Gervais only imagined having in the moment, which fits the show’s larger theme of a man who has stopped bothering to hold back his irritation with the world around him.
