With his amazing craftsmanship, Jim made a new, beautiful back for it, and brought my beloved Humphrey back to life. This is its inaugural return to performance. The tradition in classical guitar, with Bach’s works for solo cello and violin, is to play the monophonic melody that Bach gave us, while adding extra bass notes, in attempt to enhance the texture and harmony. This is like taking an early Bob Dylan song and adding a MIDI drum track. And it’s not necessary. Bach was such a great composer that he already weaved the bass notes in these works and all we have to do is harvest them by creating fingerings that will sustain the notes that make the bass line audible. Bach’s Cello Suite #1, is the first Bach repertoire that I have my students play. That's because it’s a fabulous way to enlighten them on how Bach saturates his monophonic works (one line only) with polyphony (multiple lines at once). Though, you have to go in mining for them, there are certain flags that point out possible voices, such as changes in harmony, changes of line direction and leaps greater than a single step. I wrote indicators and directions regarding this on hundreds of my students’ scores over the years. INSANE WASTE OF TIME”.
