What if the biggest problem with the Federal Reserve’s dot plot isn’t that the dots are sometimes wrong — but that we don’t know the economic story behind them? In this video, we explore the new Better Policy Project working paper “Beyond the Dot Plot: Toward Scenario-Based Monetary Policy,” by Douglas Laxton, Hayk Avetisyan, Sopio Mkervalidze, and Vazgen Poghosyan. The paper proposes moving beyond communication centered on individual interest-rate projections toward a more scenario-based and state-contingent approach to monetary policy. Instead of focusing only on where policymakers expect interest rates to go, the framework asks a more useful question: How should monetary policy respond if the economy evolves differently from what we currently expect? We discuss the paper’s proposed Market Reference Scenario (MRS) and alternative Case A and Case B scenarios, and consider how this framework could make monetary-policy communication more transparent, conditional, and useful when the economic outlook is uncertain. We also look at the inflation experience of 2021–22, why scenario analysis can help policymakers prepare for different outcomes, and why the Federal Reserve already has much of the analytical infrastructure needed to implement this kind of approach. The video also introduces our work at The Better Policy Project and AI Powered Learning, where we are exploring how AI can make sophisticated structural macroeconomic models more accessible for scenario analysis and policy work. 🌐 The Better Policy Project: thebetterpolicyproject.org 🤖 AI Powered Learning: https://ai-powered-learning.org/ 📍 Prague Workshop: December 7–11 At our Prague workshop, we will demonstrate how AI interfaces can interact with versions of the Global Integrated Monetary and Fiscal Model (GIMF) to explore alternative fiscal scenarios, policy shocks, and instrument-specific multipliers. Don’t just study the economy. Model it. If you found the discussion useful, subscribe to The Better Policy Project, like the video, and tell us what you think in the comments.
